Manhattan Strategy Group’s Adult Education Experts to Present at COABE 2023

Bethesda, MD – Experts from Manhattan Strategy Group’s (MSG) adult education team will present sessions on career pathways, research, policy and practice, and professional development at the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) 2023 National Conference, April 2–5 at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, GA.

MSG’s presenters will discuss timely information for the adult education field that ties into this year’s conference theme, Elevate to A Higher Level, including a new training platform for the STudent Achievement in Reading (STAR) initiative, the latest trends in evidence-based reading instruction (EBRI), partnerships between adult education and postsecondary apprenticeship programs, and the growing demand for workers in supply chain automation. LINCS and Federal Initiatives from OCTAE
Tuesday, April 4, 2023 | 8:00 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. | Room: M304

Participants in this session will learn about many of the Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education’s (OCTAE) current investments, how to access those valuable resources, and how to leverage the Literacy Information and Communication System (LINCS) training catalog and trainers to incorporate them into their programs and classrooms. Cameron Christy, STAR Project Manager at MSG, will present during this session on accessing STAR training in the LINCS system.

Evidence-Based Reading Instruction for Adult Educators: A Discussion on Trends and Insights Impacting Student Success

Lori Meyer, Director at MSG, will facilitate a conversation on recent trends in EBRI and the implications for adult education with OCTAE Education Program Specialist Katie Chase; Dr. John Sabatini, Distinguished Research Professor at University of Memphis; and Dr. Elizabeth Tighe, Associate Professor at Georgia State. The discussion will include an overview of instructional and research insights, as well as EBRI developments and practices that have shown to be promising in supporting positive learner outcomes in reading skill attainment.

Registered Apprenticeships in Adult Education: Building the Supply Chain Automation Workforce Through Registered Apprenticeship Expansion

Melissa Zervos, Subject Matter Expert, Adult Education and Workforce Development at MSG, will provide an overview of the growing demand for workers in supply chain automation. The session will explore how registered apprenticeships can educate and train individuals to work in these critical occupations and how a new intermediary organization can partner with adult education providers and programs on this education and training.

STudent Achievement in Reading (STAR): A Hybrid Approach to Evidence-Based Reading Instruction

STAR was created to assist states and local programs in making systemic and instructional changes to improve the reading achievement of intermediate-level adult learners. STAR is a comprehensive reading reform initiative for implementing EBRI delivered in a hybrid web-based format. STAR training and technical assistance includes professional development, tools, and resources. During this session, MSG’s Melissa Zervos and Cameron Christy will share the evidence base supporting STAR and how to get involved with STAR training.

Adult Educators Partnering with Scaling Apprenticeship Grantees: Leveraging Opportunities and Overcoming Challenges

Many Scaling Apprenticeship grantees and subgrantees have been working with their local adult education programs to enroll adult learners in pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs. MSG’s Cameron Christy will lead a discussion with two adult education leaders, Jamil Steele with Lincoln Land Community College Adult Education and Tara Branscome with Northwest-Shoals Community College Adult Education, who have partnered with their local Scaling Apprenticeship grantee programs to help attendees better understand apprenticeships, apprenticeship opportunities for their students, and successful partnership strategies with apprenticeship programs in high-demand sectors.
