Ahead of COABE Conference, Manhattan Strategy Group Supports Release of STAR Research Synthesis for Adult Ed Practitioners
March 30, 2023

Bethesda, MD – STudent Achievement in Reading (STAR), a national professional development initiative for adult reading instruction, has just released its latest research synthesis for practitioners in advance of the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE) 2023 National Conference, April 2–5 in Atlanta, GA. The research synthesis was developed with the support of two national reading experts, Dr. John Sabatini, a Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Memphis, and Dr. Elizabeth Tighe, an Associate Professor at Georgia State University. Lori Meyer, STAR Project Director at Manhattan Strategy Group will join Sabatini and Tighe to discuss the synthesis at the COABE session, Evidence-Based Reading Instruction for Adult Educators: A Discussion on Trends and Insights Impacting Student Success on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at 11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in room INTL 2 at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

As part of maintaining participant engagement with STAR and ensuring the training is grounded in the most recent evidence-based reading instruction (EBRI) research, the STAR team, led by Manhattan Strategy Group, conducts an annual review of reading research and produces a research synthesis. The review provides the field with up-to-date information on promising practices, challenges, and new developments in the science of reading that adult education instructors and administrators can use in EBRI implementation.

“The STAR research synthesis is a valuable tool designed to support practitioners in their efforts to increase literacy rates among adult learners. The latest synthesis takes a new approach to the annual review of literature on adult literacy to hone in on five timely, relevant themes impacting the field, including vocabulary, comprehension strategies, comprehension monitoring, and prior knowledge, applying the ‘Simple View’ to adult learning, and assessments,” said Meyer.

STAR was created by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education. STAR helps its state partners align professional development programming to Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Sec. 223 requirements. Since its inception, STAR has supported over 20 states and local programs in improving adult reading achievement by implementing EBRI.
