On Friday, February 13, 2015, nine MSG team members visited the JoAnn Leleck Elementary School at Broad Acres in Silver Spring, MD to distribute books to 400 students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. During the event, second grade students visited the library media center with their classroom teacher and selected their own books, received book plates to insert into their selected books to display their name, and were given stickers and a friendship activity sheet by MSG and Reading is Fundamental volunteers. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade received books their teachers pre-selected for them the morning of the event in their respective classrooms.
In addition to the book distribution, MSG team members had the opportunity to visit 21 classrooms as guest readers. During the 15-20 minute visits MSG team members read aloud to the students. The MSG guest readers read books from either their personal collections, the new books students just selected, or a teacher selection. This summer, MSG and RIF will once again visit Leleck ES at Broad Acres and distribute six books per child in a book bag with stickers and summer activity sheets.
Said acting principal Frank Kaplan, “On behalf of our school staff, thank you for supporting us in fostering a love of reading among our children. Your generosity and commitment inspires us to do all we can for our children.
